The RTF is in the process of developing a standard protocol to estimate savings for commmissioning of commercial heat pump water heaters. The general concept is to establish a regionally-accepted baseline and guidance for measuring the water consumption and as-operated efficiency of large central heat pump water heater systems. These pieces would then be used, as guided by the protocol's calculator, to estimate achieved savings. The efficiency measurements will provide practitioners a guide as to whether the system's target efficiency is being achieved, and if not, a feedback mechanism to confirm whether any corrective actions taken were successful. The RTF discussed this measure concept at its December 2023 and March 2025 meetings. The Heat Pump Water Heaters subcommitee will likely be taking up this topic as the contract analysts further build out the components of the standard protocol over the course of 2025.
