The RTF CAT performed initial measure scoping to determine the feasibility of a measure based on optimizing the controls between a ductless heat pump and a backup electric forced air furnace. The RTF Ductless Heat Pump for Forced Air Furnace SF and MH measure does not include any specification for how the two systems are controlled. The theory behind an optimized controls measure is that additional savings would be possible if the systems interacted to maximize use of the ductless heat pump and minimize use of the electric furnace.
At this time there is not sufficient data to determine if additional savings is possible. In order to proceed with additional work in developing this measure the following would be required:
1. Data that demonstrates how controls are operated currently for homes with both a ductless heat pump and forced air furnace
2. Optimized controls field pilots
